March is here History keeps going!
We are on our way to spring!
Love and acceptance and perseverance in 2025!
We are still in challenging times. DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) continues to divide our country and communities. Please consider patronizing these minority owned businesses. If you know of Black and women owed business and business run by people with special abilities. Email me at deborah@justjameen.com. In April we will start to list these businesses in a Just Jameen directory, even if you make what we make. This is the time to pull together. Let have our new Green Book to make it through the next few years.
I want to take this opportunity to tell our seasoned and new customers how much we continue to appreciate you. Continue to follow us on Facebook and Instagram as well as sign up for our MailChimp for specials and events.
NOTE: As we research some of our jar selections, please note the 16-ounce and 8-ounce jars will have a different top for what we hope will be a brief time. Supply issues, threats of tariffs and rising prices are a part of many product-based companies. We want to avoid raising our prices as we do not know what the drive towards tariffs will mean to supplies, especially for small businesses. At this point we do not expect it to affect our main blends, just packaging currently. We will keep you informed, and adjustments are made.
The challenges in our country have been many and it is our goal this coming year to give you a small slice of history each month. There is this push to hide parts of history, but history defines who we are and who we become. If you want to block people from thriving, block their history. This is what slavery tried to do. We are still standing. Millions did not make it but I and if you are reading this, we are some of the ones who did. The Green Book was interesting to me. My mother Lillie Young owned a restaurant and hotel in the Idlewild/Baldwin area, a black resort in Michigan. It was one of a few places Black people could vacation without the evils of discrimination and violence. She had her hotel built by a friend from Chicago and it was completed in 1951 and named it The Three Sister Hotel (in honor of her three daughters.
The Negro Motorist Green Book was an annual travel guide for African Americans that was published from 1936 to 1967. Victor Green, a postal worker, and World War I veteran created it. The book helped Black travelers find safe and comfortable lodging, dining, and other services during the Jim Crow era. It was discontinued after the Civil Right Act of 1964.
How it was created
- Green started the book in Harlem in 1936 with help from his wife, Alma.
- The first editions focused on Harlem, but they quickly expanded to cover other regions and states.
- The book included listings for lodging, restaurants, gas stations, hair salons, barbers, and more.
- The book also included travel articles, driving tips, and essays.
Why it was important
- The Green Book helped Black travelers find services and places that would welcome them.
- It boosted Black-owned businesses along the road.
- It was a valuable resource for African American motorists who faced risks and discrimination.
Why did it end?
- Publication of the Green Book ceased shortly after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed racial discrimination.
- The book fell into obscurity.
