HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
We send our prayers to the victims of the horrific attacks in New Orleans as people celebrated bringing in the new year. This should never happen ever to anyone, and we pray the authorities will do what is necessary to ensure everyone is safe and those injured will be able to recover. Praying is not enough these are really challenging times!
I want to take this opportunity to tell our seasoned and new customers how much we appreciate you. There will be some changes to our system in January and I am asking you to continue your patience as we navigate these significant changes. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram as well as sign up for our MailChimp for specials and events.
NOTE: As we research some of our jar selections, please note the 16-ounce and 8-ounce jars will have a different top for what we hope will be a brief time. Supply issues and rising prices are a part of many product-based companies. We want to avoid raising our prices as we do not know what the drive towards tariffs will do to supplies, especially for small businesses. At this point we do not expect it to affect our main blends, just packaging currently. We will keep you informed, and adjustments are made.
The challenges in our country have been many and it is our goal this coming year to give you a small slice of history each month. There is this push to hide parts of history, but history defines who we are and who we become. If you want to block a people from thriving, block their history. This is what slavery tried to do. We are still standing. Millions did not make it but I and if you are reading this, we are some of the ones who did. I have two items to bring to your attention this month. The meaning of News Year Day Celebration in Black Culture and information about a dynamic woman in Black entertainment culture. Judith Jamison who left us on November 9th, 2024.
News Year Day Celebration and the meaning to the African American Community. We know meany traditional meanings get lost in the celebration and I even had an epiphany a few days before News Year Day. I remember as a young girl, mom always had this large New Years Day dinner and family came from all part of Michigan and Chicago to celebrate. I am not sure I knew the exact history, but because I love history (mom was a history teacher before becoming an attorney). A few friends mentioned they had to have black eye peas on New Years for good luck. I remembered hearing this especially the last couple of years and so researcher that I am after seeing it on social media for the first time this year, I looked this up. “Culture is the sum of who we are — our experiences, our heritage, and our lineage. It is handed down, often subconsciously, from generation to generation. This is true regarding the culture of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day for Black Americans. For the first time in years, I had the traditions thanks to a special person who cooks better than me. (I did make the greens) We had Black eye peas, cornbread, greens…. I did not make pork but yes, we had meat lol.
On Dec. 31 it is common for many Black Americans across the U.S. to gather in churches and homes to bring in the New Year as a community to commemorate Watch Night. This cultural tradition can be traced to Dec. 31, 1862, when freed Blacks in the Union States gathered in churches and other safe spaces to pray for the freedom of enslaved Blacks in the Confederate, slave-holding states. Simultaneously, thousands of enslaved Black people gathered on plantations throughout the South – praying and waiting for President Abraham Lincoln to sign the Emancipation Proclamation into law which proclaimed Black people free from the bondage of chattel slavery. Dec. 31 became known as Freedom’s Eve — freed Black people, enslaved Black people, and White abolitionists were ‘watching’ in the night with ‘tip-toe anticipation’ on Dec. 31, 1862, for Jan. 1, 1863, to ring freedom’s bell.” Read more
The black-eyed peas that were “lucky” enough to be left behind would make their way to Southern tables, especially the tables of Southern slaves who celebrated emancipation as ordered by President Abraham Lincoln on New Year's Day, January 1, 1863. After the war, peas were always eaten on the first day of January. Read more and research for yourself.
